Daniel Kueblboeck is a young German vocalist. He was one of the finalists in the Casting Show called "Deutschland sucht den
Superstar" (Germany is looking for its superstar). With his way of singing and his fancy looks, he became a STAR for other young people.
He had suffered from his protruding ears since childhood, and when he got famous some photographers even taped them back during photo shootings.
Because of the high risks of the traditional methods, he never wanted to have them operated on, but with the Dr Merck's stitch method he could finally realise his dream.

Ear specialist Dr Merck explained the goals of his clinic in Majorca in an interview with TOP Magazine Ruhrstadt in Number 4, 19. year, winter 2005

TOP: With all due respect, Dr. Merck: Did it have to be Daniel Küblböck as your first patient, and did it have to be a live operation with cameras?

Dr. Merck: It is important to know the story from the beginning. The young Küblböck said in a press interview how unhappy he was about his protruding ears, but also that he was very afraid of the usual invasive operation. This is typical of many people who suffer from jug ears. Daniel had the courage to have the operation in public. I admire him for that. He himself said in the press conference that he wanted to be a role model for young people so that they do not accept their suffering from "Dumbo" ears as their inevitable fate.

TOP: Why a clinic in Majorca?

Dr. Merck: You can reach Majorca easily and for a reasonable price from all of Europe. The medical conditions are brilliant. If you consider having your ears done, you can combine an operation with a holiday and return home with a high self-esteem.

TOP: How can it be that your small operation really fixes the ears forever? Is there a relapse quota?

Dr. Merck: My method is hugely accepted. Up to now we have operated on more than 5.000 ears successfully, with not a single failure! 75% of the patients are over 14 years old. A long time ago I used to operate with the old, common method, where there is a cut behind the ear, the cartilage is freed, the skin is removed and some of the cartilage is thinned out. I know what this means for a patient. The new position of the ear was fixed by placing countless stitches in the open wound. This procedure had a lot of risks, with sometimes very ugly results; the risk of infection was also very high. With my stitch method, these risks have been eliminated. The only wounds are tiny stitches that heal after a few days without problems.

TOP: How did you come to invent your "stitch method"?

Dr. Merck: I read a publication by an unknown Israeli in 1995, who described how to insert a thread under the skin without a cut. And then there were the nuns. As an ENT doctor I observed that by wearing a wimple for years, the nuns' ears were flattened to their heads as if they'd been glued there. This means that the cartilage reshapes itself if you force it into a new position long enough.

TOP: And your patients are satisfied?

Dr. Merck: The oldest patient was 86, the oldest female patient 74 years old. A lot of men are between 50 and 60 years old because they are starting to lose their hair and that means they are not able to hide their ears as they used to anymore. Some of them start crying with joy when they first look in the mirror. For weeks after the operation I still get thank-you letters with photos from before and after the operation. I never experienced this during the 17 years when I operated with the old, common method.
